How to extend UPS battery life?
2024-07-08

here is to prolong the six key steps of the UPS battery life:

1.   to regularly check the battery terminal voltage and internal resistance. For a 12V single battery, if the terminal voltage difference between individual batteries is found to be greater than 0.4V or the internal resistance of the battery is greater than 80mΩ during inspection, it is necessary to balance the charge of each single battery to restore the internal resistance of the battery and eliminate the voltage imbalance. During balanced charging, the voltage should be maintained between 13.5 and 13.8 volts. After a good balanced charging treatment, the internal resistance of most batteries can be reduced to less than 30mΩ.

2. During the operation of the UPS power supply, the imbalance caused by the change of battery characteristics over time cannot be eliminated by the charging loop inside the UPS. Therefore, for the battery pack that has been significantly unbalanced, if the off-line equalization treatment is not carried out in time, the imbalance will become more and more serious.

3. After the UPS power is shut down for more than 10 days, start the UPS without loading before restarting it, and allow the internal charging loop to float the battery for more than 10 to 12 hours, and then connect it to the load.

4. UPS power supply for a long time in a floating state, and there is no discharge process, is in the store "standby" state. If this situation lasts too long, it will cause the battery to be scrapped because it is stored for too long, mainly manifested as the internal resistance of the battery increases, and the internal resistance can reach several ohms when it is serious.

5. It is recommended that users deliberately unplug the mains input every 20 months to allow the UPS power supply to work in a state where the battery provides energy to the inverter. However, this operation cannot last too long, when the load reaches about 30% of the rated output, it should be discharged for about 10 minutes.

6. Reducing the number of deep discharge of the battery can extend the service life of the battery, which is closely related to the discharge depth. The lighter the UPS power load is, the greater the ratio between the available capacity and the rated capacity that the battery can provide when the mains power is off. Therefore, when the UPS power supply automatically shuts down because the battery voltage is too low, the battery discharge depth will be greater. How to reduce the occurrence of deep battery discharge? When the mains is interrupted, the UPS uses batteries to supply power to the inverter. At this time, most UPS power supplies will produce a periodic alarm sound at intervals of about 4 seconds to inform the user that the battery is providing energy. Once the alarm sound becomes urgent, it indicates that the power supply has been deeply discharged, and emergency measures need to be taken immediately to turn off the UPS power supply. If there are no special circumstances, try to avoid allowing the UPS power supply to continue working until the battery voltage is too low to automatically shut down.

By following these steps and paying attention to battery maintenance and environmental conditions, you can effectively extend the life of the UPS battery.
